Roots Music Night -  Saturdays at The Escondite

Hillgrass Bluebilly Southern California Chapter

Hillgrass Bluebilly was founded in 2005 by Keith Mallette and Ryan Tackett in Phoenix, AZ. The original intent was to promote roots music in Phoenix and put on great shows. In turn, creating a movement there and had many acts perform at events such as Bob Log III, Ralph Stanley, The Weary Boys, Larry and His Flask, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Possessed By Paul James, and a whole lot more. The promotion outfit eventually morphed into a record label after relocating to Austin, Texas releasing critically acclaimed albums by Possessed By Paul James, James Hand, Tom VandenAvond, and Left Lane Cruiser to name a few. Additionally, winner of an independent music award for best concept album which is a compilation featuring covers of Hank Williams and Leadbelly tunes entitled “Hiram and Huddie“.

We’re doing our best here in Southern California to carry the torch and further on the tradition as well as help create a culture and bring a revival to roots music in Southern California.

From OC Weekly:
Texas label Hillgrass Bluebilly believes in just about what you’d think—or hope—they believe, which is a shotgun marriage of roots, Americana, country, punk, folk and rock, all delivered by bands that’d actually seem pretty at home hoisting a shotgun, should the occasion demand. Their Hello-California! show is helmed by the perfectly selected Restavrant, who even with a couple guys on deck are still very much in the tradition of one-maniac-bands like Hasil Adkins and Bob Log III. It’s hollerin’ amplified by electricity, and it’ll rush through your brain like a jar of white lightning. Also on the bill are LA’s RT n’ the 44s, doing their own ramshackle country with instruments they built themselves. A good ol’ fashioned Sunday kick-in-the-ass!
